What does measurement actually comprise? When we measure we attribute a symbol (a name, a letter, a number) to an object (in psychology the object is very often a person). This symbol is not randomly assigned to the object, but represents a particular characteristic of the object and is ascribed to the object according to minutely defined procedures.

This description of measurement might seem a little abstract. We will therefore proceed with a number of concrete examples to explain the meaning of measurement. The examples explain the concepts "symbol", "characteristic", and "procedure".
